The documented identity and history of 'Red Dawn' require caution because nursery sources do not consistently classify the plant as Acer palmatum. A nursery listing identifies 'Red Dawn' as Acer shirasawanum × palmatum and describes an upright, spreading tree with scarlet spring growth, burgundy summer foliage, and crimson autumn color. However, that description does not establish the cultivar's original selection, geographical origin, breeder, or commercial introduction. No reliable original-introducer account or dated selection record was established for an Acer palmatum cultivar bearing this name. The available evidence therefore does not justify assigning an origin year, selector, hybridizer, or parentage. Before publishing a cultivar-specific origin history, Pungo Maples should confirm whether its inventory represents Acer palmatum 'Red Dawn', Acer shirasawanum 'Red Dawn', or a plant marketed under a hybrid classification.
